A young mother in Oklahoma was home alone with her baby when she shot and killed an intruder. Sarah McKinley was on the phone with the 911 operator telling her that the man is trying to get into the house. She says to the operator, “I have two guns in my hands, if he gets in should I shoot him?” The 911 operator responds “I can’t tell you that you can do that but you do what you have to do to protect your baby.” That’s just what this young mother did; she shot and killed the man as he made his way into the house.
McKinley baby’s father died of cancer last week and the day after her his funeral a man dropped by and said he was a neighbor just dropping in to say hello. He introduced himself as Justin Martin. She did not let him in and he left. Martin showed up with another man on New Year’s Eve with a 12 inch hunting knife and tried to break into McKinley’s home.
As one of the men was walking around the house trying all the doors, McKinley grabbed her 12-gauge shotgun then called 911 and had the conversation with the 911 operator. She tells ABC News that she “grabbed the shot-gun, went into the bedroom and grabbed a pistol, put the bottle in the baby’s mouth and called 911.”
The 911 operator stayed on the phone for 21 minutes with McKinley and when Martin kicked in the door and came after her with a knife, McKinley shot the 24 year-old man. The police are not pressing any charges on the teen mother and they call the shooting “justified.” The other man’s name is Dustin Stewart, who turned himself in to the police.
McKinley said she didn’t want to shoot him, but when it came down to either him or her son, protecting her son came first. She also said “there’s nothing more dangerous than a woman with a child.”
